A violent clash broke out between the supporters of a reinstated union parishad chairman and an acting chairman over the transfer of official responsibilities in Baniyachong, Habiganj. The altercation, which escalated into widespread rural violence, resulted in injuries to more than fifty individuals, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baniyachong Police Station and three other police officers.
According to police and local sources, the dispute is centred around the leadership of No. 7 Boroiuri Union Parishad in Baniyachong Upazila. The elected chairman, Farid Uddin, who is a local Awami League leader, was arrested and imprisoned in connection with multiple cases filed over attacks that took place during the political unrest following 5 August 2024.
Following his arrest, the authorities issued a temporary suspension order against him. In his absence, union parishad member Kafil Uddin was appointed to execute the duties of the acting chairman. Farid Uddin was recently released from prison on bail and subsequently filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging his suspension. The High Court ruled in his favour, reinstating his position as the rightful chairman.
On Monday, 8 June, Farid Uddin arrived at the union parishad office to officially resume his responsibilities as chairman. This prompted a heated verbal dispute between Farid Uddin and the acting chairman, Kafil Uddin.
The disagreement rapidly escalated as local residents and supporters of both factions divided into two opposing groups. Armed with various domestic weapons, the factions took up adversarial positions, generating severe tension across the locality. The situation dissolved into a direct physical confrontation at approximately 12:00 pm in Boroiuri village.
Upon receiving reports of the violence, law enforcement personnel deployed to the scene to restore order. The officers engaged in containment efforts for over two hours, ultimately bringing the situation under control by 2:15 pm.
