The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has imposed financial penalties on a Bangladeshi football player and the team manager following disciplinary breaches during a recent international tournament in the Maldives. The disciplinary action stems from a physical altercation that transpired between the players of Bangladesh and the host nation, the Maldives, during their final match of a four-nation tournament.
The tournament in question was a four-nation competition held in the Maldives. During the final fixture of the tournament involving the host nation and Bangladesh, an on-field altercation erupted between the participating athletes. Reports indicated that the host team’s football players exhibited aggressive behaviour, which in certain instances resulted in physical contact and assault against the Bangladeshi athletes.
However, two Bangladeshi football players, identified as Al Amin and Mirajul Islam, were also found to have engaged in misconduct directed towards the match referees and the opposing team’s players. Following these disruptive events, the match commissioner compiled a detailed disciplinary report detailing the specific code violations. Based strictly on the factual findings presented within the match commissioner’s official report, FIFA’s disciplinary body imposed a financial penalty consisting of several hundred Swiss Francs (CHF) on the Bangladeshi footballer Mirajul Islam, as well as on the national team manager, Shaheen Hasan. Furthermore, the governing body has placed the conduct of the second player, Al Amin, under strict institutional surveillance and monitoring.
The physical confrontation occurred during the June international window. During this period, the senior national football team of Bangladesh was competing in San Marino. Simultaneously, the Bangladesh Olympic football team was deployed to participate in the four-nation tournament hosted by the Maldives. Because the competition was officially recognized by FIFA and organized within the designated FIFA international window, the global governing body retained full jurisdiction to initiate formal disciplinary proceedings and enforce regulatory sanctions against the participating individuals.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has recently received the official correspondence from FIFA outlining the specific penalties and disciplinary rulings. The documentation notes that the actions of the host nation’s players were also entirely outside the established disciplinary regulations. However, the Bangladesh Football Federation has stated that it is currently unable to confirm whether the Maldives national team or its individual players have received equivalent sanctions from FIFA.
In response to the volatile events that transpired in the Maldives, the Bangladesh Football Federation has constituted an internal investigative committee to examine the details of the incident. The chairman of this newly formed fact-finding committee, Zakir Hossain Chowdhury, confirmed the receipt of the international correspondence, stating that FIFA had issued a formal letter to the federation regarding the situation in the Maldives. He further noted that the committee is actively investigating the specific details of the incident and will formulate its own independent decisions based on their internal findings.
In addition to the disciplinary issues in the Maldives, allegations of code of conduct breaches have also emerged from a separate regional tournament. Misconduct allegations were raised during the Women’s South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship held in India. In this specific instance, the allegations did not involve the coaching staff or the playing squad, but were directed exclusively at the team manager, identified as Khalid Mahmud Naumi.
The South Asian Football Federation had dispatched an official letter to the BFF during the operational course of the tournament, formally accusing the manager of misconduct. Following the conclusion of the women’s tournament, the Bangladesh Football Federation initiated a separate three-member investigative committee specifically tasked with reviewing the allegations detailed in the SAFF correspondence.
