Egyptian authorities announced on Sunday that they had foiled a terrorist plot, resulting in the death of two suspected militants and a civilian in a shootout during a raid in the capital, Cairo. The operation was said to have thwarted a plot believed to be linked to the Hasm movement, an armed group alleged to have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The raid took place following recent intelligence suggesting that the Hasm movement was planning to revive its operations within Egypt, targeting both security and economic facilities in the country.
Details of the Operation:
| Date of Raid | Not disclosed |
|---|---|
| Location | Bulaq al-Dakrour, Cairo |
| Militants Killed | 2 |
| Civilian Casualty | 1 (passerby) |
| Suspects Identified | 5 plot leaders linked to previous attacks |
| Militant Training | One suspect trained in a “neighbouring country” |
According to the Egyptian Ministry of the Interior, police forces launched the raid on a militant hideout in the Bulaq al-Dakrour area, a densely populated district of Cairo. The raid was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle extremist cells allegedly operating within Egypt’s borders.
Shootout and Casualties
During the operation, two suspected militants opened fire on security forces and the surrounding area. The exchange of gunfire led to the death of both suspects, as well as a bystander who was caught in the crossfire.
The statement from the Interior Ministry confirmed that the civilian casualty was an innocent passerby. While the identities of the suspects were not immediately revealed, the ministry clarified that the individuals were part of a broader terror plot designed to destabilise the country.
The Plot’s Connection to the Hasm Movement
The ministry’s statement also identified five key leaders behind the planned terrorist activity. These individuals, who were sentenced to life in prison in absentia, were implicated in a series of attacks that rocked Egypt after the 2013 overthrow of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
Following the ousting of Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood was outlawed in Egypt, and many of its members were either imprisoned or forced to flee the country, with many seeking refuge in Turkey and Qatar.
The Hasm movement was believed to have carried out a series of assassination attempts and bombings between 2016 and 2019. However, the group had largely disappeared from public attention in recent years.
Authorities’ Statement on the Suspects’ Background
One of the suspects killed in the raid had reportedly received advanced military training in a “neighbouring country” before entering Egypt through an illegal border crossing. The suspect was allegedly planning to carry out terrorist attacks within the country, according to the ministry.
The statement further added that this individual, along with others involved in the operation, had been part of a larger network of militants attempting to disrupt Egypt’s national security.
The Impact of Morsi’s Overthrow and Sisi’s Regime
Since President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took power following Morsi’s 2013 ousting, Egypt has experienced a severe crackdown on political dissent. While the government often promotes its role as a guarantor of national security, human rights groups have long criticised the repression of opposition voices and the curtailing of freedom of expression.
The Hasm movement and other militant groups have faded from the public eye in recent years, but authorities have continued to monitor extremist activity closely.
Recent Developments and Social Media Footage
The latest operation comes amid growing concerns over the revival of militant activity in Egypt, fuelled by reports of live-fire drills conducted by Hasm members in a desert area. A video circulating on social media platforms earlier this month appeared to show Hasm militants engaged in military training, sparking further alarm within Egyptian security circles.
Authorities have not yet provided specific details regarding the individuals in the video, but the timing of the footage raised concerns that the group might be preparing for more attacks on Egyptian soil.
Continued Threats to National Security
While Egypt’s authorities have claimed a significant victory by neutralising these militant suspects, the threat of extremism remains a persistent concern. The raid in Cairo serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks posed by militant groups, particularly those with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and other outlawed factions. The government’s efforts to combat terrorism will continue to shape Egypt’s security landscape in the years ahead, particularly as the country grapples with both domestic unrest and regional instability.
