On Friday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on Israel to reconsider its plan to take control of Gaza City, describing the move as “wrong” and warning it would only exacerbate the conflict and endanger civilian lives.

“This action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages,” Starmer stated.
“It will only bring more bloodshed.”

His remarks followed the announcement by the Israeli military of its intention to seize control of Gaza City, a proposal reportedly initiated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and approved by his security cabinet.

Starmer’s condemnation reflects a hardening stance by the UK government, which has become increasingly critical of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, especially amid mounting humanitarian concerns.

Timeline of Events:

Date Event
Last Week Starmer pledged the UK would formally recognise a Palestinian state in September
This Friday Starmer condemned Israel’s plan to control Gaza City as “wrong”
Same Day Israeli military announced its intent to seize control of Gaza City, backed by its security cabinet

UK Government’s Position:

  • Ceasefire Call: Starmer reiterated the urgent need for a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza.
  • Humanitarian Focus: He highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis and the inhumane conditions under which Hamas is holding hostages.
  • Diplomatic Resolution:

“What we need is a ceasefire, a surge in humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages by Hamas, and a negotiated solution,” he said.
“A diplomatic solution is possible, but both parties must step away from the path of destruction.”

Starmer also warned that without good-faith negotiations, the prospect of a two-state solution is rapidly diminishing.

“The UK and its allies are working on a long-term plan to secure peace in the region… but that vision is vanishing before our eyes.”

Summary of the UK’s Recent Commitments:

Policy Area Starmer Government’s Stance
Recognition of Palestine UK to recognise a Palestinian state by September, if Israel fails to act
On Gaza Offensive Condemns Israeli escalation; urges immediate de-escalation
Humanitarian Aid Supports increased humanitarian assistance and the release of all hostages
Two-State Solution Reaffirms UK’s commitment to a negotiated two-state solution for lasting regional peace

The British Prime Minister’s intervention marks a significant moment in UK-Israel relations, as the government pushes for a diplomatic path out of the current crisis, amid rising international pressure on Israel.
