Dhaka, Sunday: Renowned Bangladeshi actress and model Mehazabien Chowdhury has been granted bail after surrendering before the Executive Magistrate Court in a case filed against her on charges of embezzlement and issuing threats.
The case alleges that Mehazabien and her brother, Alisan Chowdhury, misappropriated Tk 27 lakh, which they had received from the complainant under the pretext of making him a partner in their family business. The duo were also accused of intimidation and issuing death threats when the complainant demanded repayment.
According to court sources, Mehazabien surrendered through her lawyer before Dhaka Executive Magistrate Court–3, presided over by Afroza Haque Tania, on Sunday evening. After hearing arguments, the court granted her bail. The court’s bench assistant, Khorshed Alam, confirmed the development.
Previously, on 10 November, the same court had issued arrest warrants against Mehazabien and her brother for failing to appear at a scheduled hearing. The court had fixed 18 December as the next date to receive the arrest report.
Speaking to the press, Advocate Tuhin Howlader, Mehazabien’s lawyer, described the case as fabricated and motivated. He claimed that the actress and her brother had no prior acquaintance with the complainant, stating, “This case is entirely baseless. As Mehazabien is a successful actress, it is possible that someone from the industry, influenced by jealousy or rivalry, instigated the complainant to file a false case.”
He added, “Initially, the court issued a summons, followed by an arrest warrant upon the complainant’s application. My client was unaware of the proceedings until the warrant was reported in the media. She then voluntarily surrendered before the court and sought bail under any condition. The court, after hearing our submission, granted bail to both Mehazabien and her brother.”
The lawyer further stated that they will present their detailed defence on the next scheduled date.
Background of the Case
According to the case documents, the complainant, Amirul Islam, alleged that due to a longstanding acquaintance, Mehazabien and her brother lured him into investing Tk 27 lakh—in cash and through mobile banking service bKash—promising to make him a partner in a new family business. However, after receiving the money, they allegedly delayed the business operations repeatedly, citing various excuses.
When the complainant persistently demanded repayment, the accused reportedly asked him to meet them at a restaurant on Hatirjheel Road on 16 March. There, Mehazabien, her brother, and four or five unidentified individuals allegedly abused him verbally and warned him not to demand the money again. They also threatened to kill him if he appeared near their residence.
Following this incident, the complainant approached Vatara Police Station, where he was advised to file a case with the court. Subsequently, a case was lodged under Sections 107 and 117(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) before the Executive Magistrate Court in Dhaka.
The matter is scheduled for further hearing on 18 December, when both sides are expected to present their statements.
