Ivory Coast began their World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Philadelphia, decided by a 90th-minute winner from substitute Amad Diallo. The Manchester United forward struck from the edge of the penalty area to break the deadlock in the final minute of normal time, cruelly denying a South American side that had seen three separate goalbound efforts thwarted by the frame of the goal.
Ecuador established themselves as the more dangerous side during the opening 45 minutes, creating several clear opportunities to take the lead. The first major opening came courtesy of a defensive error by Ivory Coast’s Emmanuel Agbadu, which allowed Enner Valencia space inside the penalty box. However, the forward failed to hit the target, lofting his shot over the crossbar.
John Yeboah came significantly closer shortly afterwards, unleashing a powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area that struck the crossbar. The woodwork came to the rescue of the African nation once more before the interval, when Alan Minda collected a precise through-ball from Pedro Vite and fired a shot directly against the post.
For Ivory Coast, 19-year-old Ousmane Diomande provided a consistent threat on the right wing, though his progressive plays went unrewarded. Nicolas Pépé squandered a promising opportunity by hesitating to shoot, while another of his goalbound attempts was inadvertently blocked by his own striker, Elye Wahi.
The pattern of near-misses for Ecuador continued immediately after the resumption of play. Valencia orchestrated a swift one-two passing combination with Gonzalo Plata before driving a shot against the outside of the post.
Following that scare, Ivory Coast began to seize control, engineering the better openings of the second half. The energetic Diomande cut into the penalty area twice, though he directed both shots off-target. He then turned provider, delivering a cross to Wahi, whose subsequent effort thudded against the crossbar.
Ecuador still posed an intermittent threat, forcing Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into a fine save from Plata’s long-range drive, while Joel Ordóñez headed a free-kick over the bar.
Just as the match appeared destined to end goalless, Ivory Coast produced the decisive moment in the 90th minute. Wilfried Singo drove forward with a powerful run down the flank before delivering a precise cross. Stationed at the edge of the penalty area, Diallo adjusted his body to fire a perfect low shot that went in off the inside of the post, securing all three points for his country.
