DHAKA, 20 April 2026 – Former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed has arrived in Dhaka to begin his tenure as the head coach of the Pakistan Test team. His appointment, confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on 18 April 2026, comes just over a month after he announced his formal retirement from international cricket on 15 March 2026.
Sarfaraz’s transition from player to head coach in a mere 33 days has sparked significant discussion within the cricketing fraternity. While some observers expressed surprise at the speed of the appointment, the PCB noted that Sarfaraz had been integral to the national setup long before his official retirement. Prior to this role, he served as a member of the national selection committee and held various developmental positions.
The appointment follows a period of instability regarding the Pakistan Test coaching position. Since 2024, the role has seen multiple changes. Jason Gillespie previously held the post, followed by Aaqib Javed. Most recently, former cricketer Azhar Mahmood served as interim coach during the home series against South Africa in October 2025; however, the PCB opted not to extend his contract, leaving the position vacant for several months.
Sarfaraz’s journey into coaching began in earnest in November 2025, shortly after his final first-class appearances in October. He was tasked with supervising the Pakistan Shaheens (‘A’ team) and the Under-19 squads. His remit included overseeing player development pathways, coordinating with coaching staff, and identifying long-term talent.
The PCB’s strategic objective, as stated in an official press release, was to accelerate the development of Pakistan’s cricketing structure and ensure continuity between the youth, ‘A’, and senior national teams. Sarfaraz’s credentials were further bolstered during the U-19 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates in December 2025. Serving as a consultant, he helped guide the team to a victory over India in the final, securing the championship and reinforcing the PCB’s confidence in his leadership.
Sarfaraz Ahmed is widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s most successful captains in the modern era. He famously led Pakistan to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy title, defeating India in the final. This was Pakistan’s first 50-over ICC trophy since the 1992 World Cup, an achievement made more notable by the fact that Pakistan entered the tournament as the lowest-ranked side.

Despite his statistical success and tactical reputation, the decision to appoint a ‘novice’ coach has met with criticism from several former Pakistani cricketers. Addressing these concerns during a recent press interaction in Karachi, Sarfaraz stated: “Former cricketers and my erstwhile colleagues have their own opinions. However, I am positive about making the most of this opportunity.”
The upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh is a designated part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. The Pakistan contingent arrived in Dhaka on Sunday morning to begin preparations.
First Test: Starts 8 May, Dhaka.
Second Test: Starts 16 May, Sylhet.
