Bangladesh have initiated their three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Australia with a resolute counter-attack at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. After being put in to bat by the visitors, the hosts rebounded from the early loss of opener Saif Hassan to finish the mandatory ten-over powerplay on 62 runs for the loss of one wicket.
This fixture breaks a long bilateral deadlock, representing the first multi-match ODI series between these two cricket nations since 2011. Historically, competitive records show that out of 22 previous ODI encounters, Bangladesh have secured just a single victory against Australia—their landmark triumph at Cardiff during the 2005 NatWest Series.
For this highly anticipated opening match, Bangladesh’s captain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, structured a versatile starting line-up featuring five specialist batsmen, two all-rounders, three frontline seamers, and three spin options. This selection included middle-order batsman Mosaddek Hossain, making his first ODI team sheet appearance since 2022. The bowling attack was spearheaded by a three-pronged pace vanguard consisting of Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Nahid Rana.
Australia’s stand-in captain, Josh Inglis—handling leadership duties for the tour—won the toss and elected to field under overcast skies, hoping to exploit any early atmospheric assistance. The touring side favoured a pace-centric strategy, selecting seamers Nathan Ellis and Xavier Bartlett alongside debutant South Australian bowling all-rounder Liam Scott, whilst utilizing Adam Zampa as their lone specialist spin option.
The contest began at a rapid pace in the second over when Bangladesh opener Saif Hassan launched his innings by clipping a wide delivery from Nathan Ellis to the boundary. Ellis, however, immediately corrected his line and length on the subsequent ball, forcing a thick outside edge from the batsman. The ball carried swiftly to the slip cordon, where Marnus Labuschagne secured a low catch to dismiss Saif for 5 runs off 5 deliveries.
The incoming batsman, Najmul Hossain Shanto, mirrored his partner’s intent by hitting his very first ball from Ellis through the infield for a boundary. On the next delivery, Ellis drew another edge that flew directly to Labuschagne at second slip; however, the Australian fielder spilled the opportunity, granting Shanto an early life.
Shanto and opener Tanzid Hasan (frequently called Tamim in domestic cricket reports) immediately capitalized on this error, shifting the pressure back onto the Australian frontline bowlers. Tanzid anchored the acceleration with a brisk 31 runs from 25 deliveries, while Shanto steadily compiled an unbeaten 25 runs from 30 balls to guide Bangladesh to a comfortable position by the end of the tenth over.
