The 2026 ICC T20 World Cup witnessed 20 teams competing for the prestigious title, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) offering a total prize pool of USD 1.35 million. In Indian rupees, this amounts to approximately ₹123.95 crore (roughly ₹164.25 crore). Despite this, India, after claiming the championship in Ahmedabad, received only USD 300,000 from ICC, equivalent to around ₹27.54 crore.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a far more substantial financial reward for the victorious Indian squad, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav. The board declared a prize of ₹131 crore (around ₹173.59 crore), surpassing the total ICC prize money awarded for the entire tournament.
India secured the title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. This victory marked several historic milestones: India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times, successfully defended the title as the reigning champion, and emerged as the first host nation to claim the trophy. The achievement has been celebrated as unprecedented in Indian cricket history, the BCCI’s award as the largest financial prize ever granted to an Indian cricket team.
Historically, the BCCI has consistently offered significant rewards to motivate players. For comparison:
| Year | Tournament | Champion | BCCI Award (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | T20 World Cup (Barbados) | India | 125 |
| 2025 | Champions Trophy | India | 58 |
| 2025 | Women’s World Cup | India | 51 |
| 2026 | T20 World Cup | India | 131 |
In 2024, following India’s T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados under Rohit Sharma, the BCCI had awarded ₹125 crore to the team. The following year, the men’s team received ₹58 crore for winning the Champions Trophy, while the women’s team earned ₹51 crore for their World Cup victory.
The BCCI’s press release emphasised:
“The Board has announced an award of ₹131 crore to the Indian men’s cricket team for their 2026 T20 World Cup victory. By defeating New Zealand in Ahmedabad, India not only retained the trophy but became the first team to win the men’s T20 World Cup three times, solidifying their position as one of the most successful sides in this format.”
The substantial reward underscores India’s cricketing dominance and the BCCI’s commitment to recognising and incentivising excellence. Beyond monetary gain, the announcement is a morale booster, further inspiring the Indian squad as they continue to maintain their standing at the pinnacle of international T20 cricket.
