A sense of alarm gripped the residents of the Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur on Sunday evening following a sudden outbreak of fire. The incident, which occurred in one of the most densely populated urban settlements in the capital, triggered an immediate emergency response from the fire services to prevent a potential catastrophe.
The blaze was reported to the authorities at approximately 7:20 PM. Upon receiving the distress call, the Fire Service and Civil Defence department dispatched two specialised units to the scene. Due to the notoriously narrow alleyways and the congested nature of the camp, there were initial fears that the fire could spread rapidly to adjacent structures.
However, through the prompt intervention of the firefighters, the situation was brought under control within a short duration. Rakibul Hasan, the duty officer at the Fire Service control room, confirmed the successful containment of the fire. "Our teams arrived swiftly and managed to extinguish the flames before they could engulf the surrounding blocks," he stated.
Local witnesses and preliminary reports suggest that the fire originated within a four-storey residential building located deep inside the camp. The primary cause is believed to be a gas cylinder explosion, a frequent hazard in urban areas where cooking facilities are often cramped and ventilation is poor. The explosion ignited combustible materials nearby, leading to a visible plume of smoke that caused panic among the thousands of camp residents.
Despite the intensity of the initial blast and the subsequent fire, there have been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries thus far. Residents managed to evacuate the affected building and the immediate vicinity as soon as the explosion was heard.

The Geneva Camp is home to a significant population living in high-density conditions. This latest incident underscores the persistent fire safety challenges faced by such settlements, where a single domestic accident can lead to widespread destruction. Authorities often highlight the difficulty of navigating fire engines through these areas, making rapid response and local fire-fighting awareness critical.
While the fire has been fully extinguished, officials are expected to conduct a thorough inspection to ensure the structural integrity of the affected building and to prevent any secondary ignitions.
