On the anniversary of the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon’s armed group Hezbollah, Israel’s military has carried out fresh strikes in the country.
On Thursday (27 November), the Israeli forces claimed to have launched attacks targeting Hezbollah positions, according to AFP.
Lebanon’s state news agency, the National News Agency (NNA), reported that Israeli aircraft conducted multiple airstrikes in the Al-Mahmudiya and Al-Jarma areas of Jezzine in the country’s south.
In a statement, the Israeli army said that various Hezbollah infrastructures across southern Lebanon were targeted and destroyed.
The statement added that several launch sites, military posts and weapon storage facilities—where Hezbollah allegedly stored arms—were also struck. Israel claimed the operation aimed to weaken the military capabilities of the Iran-backed group.
The Israeli military stated that such operations would continue to eliminate any threat to the country.
To help ease tensions that persisted for more than a year since the start of the Gaza war, Israel signed a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah on 27 November 2024. On the anniversary of that agreement, Israel carried out strikes in southern Lebanon.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel has repeatedly conducted attacks in Lebanon, usually claiming to target Hezbollah members and infrastructure to prevent the group from replenishing its weapons.
Under the agreement, Hezbollah must move its forces north of the Litani River—around 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border—and dismantle its military infrastructure there.
According to a Lebanese government plan, the country’s army must remove all Hezbollah military infrastructure from the south before the end of this year. The same process will then begin in other parts of the country.
