Police in the Bangladeshi capital have uncovered a disturbing trafficking operation involving human remains, recovering dozens of skulls and skeletal parts during a late-night raid. Authorities say the discovery points to the existence of an organised network engaged in the illicit trade of human bones, which may have been intended for sale to collectors, educational institutions, or the black market.
The operation was carried out by the Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). During the raid, officers arrested four suspected members of the alleged smuggling ring and seized 47 human skulls along with a large quantity of other skeletal remains.
According to a statement released on Monday night, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrests and the recovery of the remains. He said the suspects had been involved in the illegal collection and trade of human skeletons for an extended period.
Investigators believe the group may have obtained the bones from graves, burial grounds, or abandoned remains before storing and preparing them for distribution. Police are now attempting to determine the exact origin of the recovered skulls and skeletal fragments, as well as the intended destination of the remains.
Law enforcement officials indicated that such illicit activities are often connected to underground markets supplying anatomical specimens to buyers seeking them for medical study, decorative purposes, or occult practices. While legitimate medical institutions obtain skeletal models through authorised channels, the illegal procurement of real human remains remains a serious criminal offence.
Authorities have also begun examining whether the suspects are linked to a wider trafficking network operating within or beyond the capital. Officers are analysing phone records, financial transactions, and potential transport routes used by the group.
Below is a summary of the key details disclosed by investigators so far:
| Key Information | Details |
|---|---|
| Location of operation | Tejgaon area, Dhaka |
| Law enforcement agency | Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Tejgaon Division) |
| Arrested suspects | 4 individuals |
| Human skulls recovered | 47 |
| Other remains seized | Multiple skeletal bones and fragments |
| Investigation focus | Source of remains and wider trafficking network |
Police officials emphasised that the investigation is still in its early stages. Forensic specialists may be involved to determine whether the remains belong to recently deceased individuals or older skeletal material. Such analysis could help identify the origin of the bones and determine whether grave desecration was involved.
The authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activity around cemeteries or burial sites. Meanwhile, the arrested suspects remain in custody and are expected to face charges related to illegal possession and trafficking of human remains.
Officials say further arrests are possible as the inquiry continues.
