Tensions have escalated over the strategic Strait of Hormuz after United States President Donald Trump announced a new maritime initiative aimed at assisting commercial vessels reportedly stranded in the waterway. The plan, named “Project Freedom”, has drawn a sharp response from Iran, which has warned Washington against any form of intervention.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Iran’s National Security Commission chief, Ebrahim Azizi, described the American initiative as “interference”. He cautioned that any US involvement in what Tehran describes as a new maritime administrative arrangement in the Strait of Hormuz would be regarded as a violation of an existing ceasefire framework.
Azizi’s remarks came shortly after President Trump announced the launch of Project Freedom on his social media platform Truth Social. According to Trump, a number of commercial vessels have become trapped in and around the Strait of Hormuz due to ongoing regional instability. He stated that the United States Navy would assist in escorting these ships out of the area, claiming that several affected countries had requested American support.
The Strait of Hormuz, which links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors. Roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass through the waterway, making it a key artery for international energy trade. Any disruption in the strait has historically had significant implications for global markets.
Tensions in the region have reportedly intensified following a series of geopolitical and military developments earlier in the year, during which maritime restrictions were imposed in the area, leading to congestion and delays affecting numerous commercial vessels.
President Trump stated that Project Freedom would begin imminently, with operations expected to commence from Monday morning US local time, corresponding to Monday night in Bangladesh. He emphasised that the operation was intended to support neutral commercial shipping and ensure safe passage through the contested waterway.

The exchange highlights growing friction between Tehran and Washington over maritime security in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive shipping lanes, with both sides issuing starkly contrasting interpretations of recent developments.
