A special tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced a married couple to death for their respective roles in the rape and subsequent dismemberment of an eight-year-old child in the Pallabi locality. The verdict, delivered on Sunday, 7 June 2026, concluded a remarkably swift judicial process that took exactly 19 days from the initial commission of the crime to the final sentencing.
Judge Masroor Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal presided over the session. The judge assumed the bench at 11:00 to read out the case findings, formally pronouncing the double death sentence at 11:40. In addition to capital punishment, the primary perpetrator, Sohel Rana, was ordered to pay a fine of 500,000 BDT, whilst his wife, Swapna Akter, was penalized with a fine of 200,000 BDT.
The legal proceedings moved rapidly through the state apparatus, advancing from the recovery of the victim to the final convictions within less than three weeks:
19 May 2026 (Crime and Arrests): Law enforcement personnel discovered the dismembered torso and remains of the young victim inside a residential flat in Pallabi. Before officers breached the premises, Sohel Rana escaped by removing the window grills of a bathroom. His spouse, Swapna Akter, was detained on-site. Rana was apprehended later that evening by tracking units in the Fatullah area of Narayanganj. A criminal lawsuit was subsequently opened at Pallabi Police Station by the victim’s father.
20 May 2026 (Confessions): The two suspects were brought before Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid, where they judicially recorded voluntary confessions admitting their involvement.
1 June 2026 (Indictment): The tribunal formally framed criminal charges against both defendants, initiating an expedited trial structure involving daily depositions and cross-examinations of state witnesses.
4 June 2026 (Closing Arguments): The prosecution presented its summation, reading the testimonies of the child’s parents. The state attorney sought the maximum statutory penalty under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act for Rana, and argued for severe sentencing for Akter on the grounds of abetment and failing to intervene. The tribunal then adjourned until 7 June for the final ruling.
7 June 2026 (Sentencing): The prisoners were transported under armed police escort from central custody to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court lockup. Akter was offloaded from the prison van at 08:30, and Rana followed at 08:50, remaining in the holding facility until they were brought up to the tribunal box for the 11:40 decree.
