In the annals of Bangladesh’s banking history, the name Lutfar Rahman Sarkar stands out as truly exceptional. Far beyond being a skilled banker, he was a fearless reformer, a visionary thinker, and a genuine custodian of public interest. Today, 1 February, marks what would have been his 93rd birthday—a moment to reflect on a life dedicated to the nation, its economy, and its people.
Sarkar’s multifaceted career encompassed roles as Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Managing Director of Sonali Bank, founder of the University Employment Project (Bikalpo), part-time lecturer in Finance and Banking at Dhaka University, award-winning author, and founding co-chairman of the National Poetry Council. Yet behind these formal titles lay an unwavering patriot and a banker whose mission was to serve society rather than personal gain.
Born in 1934 in Phulkot village, Amrul Union, Shahjahanpur, Bogura, Sarkar epitomised courage, integrity, and innovation. He was profoundly committed to the principle that banking should serve the many, not the few. In his words: “Our banking system simply oils the heads of those who already have wealth. Instead, it should empower those who lack it.” For him, banks had a broader responsibility: to generate employment, stimulate the economy, and ensure social welfare alongside profitability.
This philosophy materialised in initiatives such as the University Employment Project, part-time employment schemes, and educational loan programmes. Through these ventures, countless unemployed graduates were transformed into entrepreneurs, marking a revolutionary approach in Bangladesh’s economic and social landscape. Many schemes in today’s banking sector that promote savings and social welfare trace their roots to his pioneering vision.
His courage often brought him into conflict with authority. By rejecting proposals to name projects after himself, he faced arrest and trial under military rule, only to be freed through popular student protests. He also filed lawsuits against powerful industrialists for fraudulent misappropriation of bank funds, demonstrating unparalleled bravery. Moreover, he introduced collateral-free microloans, now the foundation of Bangladesh’s SME lending, and educational loans to prevent talented students from dropping out.
Sarkar’s patronage extended beyond banking: he supported arts, literature, cultural organisations, and healthcare modernisation through accessible loans, helping build today’s renowned doctors and institutions.
