Security measures have been significantly intensified across livestock markets in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, with authorities warning against forced diversion of cattle-laden vehicles to specific markets.
The Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion, Ahsan Habib Palash, stated that close surveillance is being maintained to ensure that transport carrying sacrificial animals is not coerced into entering designated or unauthorised markets. He made the remarks after inspecting the Gabtoli Cattle Market in the capital on Sunday at around noon. Prior to the inspection of the cattle market, he also visited a bus counter in Gabtoli as part of broader security monitoring activities.
He further emphasised that strict legal action will be taken immediately against individuals or groups spreading rumours, misinformation, or misleading content on social media platforms related to Eid and sacrificial activities. According to him, such misinformation campaigns can create unnecessary panic and disrupt public order during the busy festive period.
To maintain law and order at livestock markets, coordinated operations have been launched in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies. Checkpoints have been established across key entry points in Dhaka and other major cities. High-risk and densely crowded markets are being placed under enhanced surveillance, with control rooms set up to monitor real-time activities and respond swiftly to incidents.
The security chief noted that criminal risks, including robbery targeting traders carrying large sums of cash, tend to increase during Eid as urban movement patterns shift. To counter such threats, additional patrol teams and security posts have been deployed in and around major cattle markets.
He also urged buyers and sellers to adopt cashless payment systems wherever possible in order to reduce the risk of theft and counterfeit currency circulation. Special equipment for detecting fake notes has been made available at market control points, and ongoing operations are targeting individuals involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit money.
