Police in Anwara upazila of Chattogram have arrested the main accused, Rimon Barua, also known as Tejpriyo Barua, in connection with the brutal killing of a mother and daughter. According to law enforcement, the murders were carried out over unpaid loan money taken for purchasing an auto-rickshaw, with the additional alleged motive of seizing a written loan document (stamp) to evade repayment.
At a press briefing held on Monday at the office of the Chattogram District Police Superintendent, Police Superintendent Md Masud Alam provided detailed information about the case. He stated that the incident occurred between approximately 10:30 pm and 11:00 pm on Saturday (13 June) in Chenamati village under Paraikora Union of Anwara.
The victims have been identified as Eny Barua (40), wife of Sujan Barua of the area, and their daughter Priyonti Barua (16). During the attack, a five-year-old child named Piyas Barua, who was inside the house, was injured but survived.
According to the police briefing, the Anwara Police Station team responded after receiving an emergency call via the national hotline and recovered the bloodstained bodies of the mother and daughter from the veranda and an interior room of the house. Following the incident, multiple investigation teams were formed, including members of the district Detective Branch (DB) and local police.
Based on intelligence gathering, technical analysis, and local information, the accused was arrested from the Patiya area late on Sunday night (14 June). During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly confessed to his involvement in the killings.
Police Superintendent Md Masud Alam stated that Rimon Barua had taken a loan of Tk 117,000 from the victim’s husband, Sujan Barua, for purchasing an auto-rickshaw. A written agreement (stamp) was prepared for repayment in instalments with interest. However, due to irregular repayment, disputes developed between the parties. Police believe the accused planned to retrieve the stamp to escape the debt burden.
On the night of the incident, he allegedly waited behind the house. When Eny Barua opened the rear door and stepped outside, she was attacked with a sharp weapon. Hearing her screams, her daughter Priyonti Barua came forward and was also stabbed. The accused then fled the scene, reportedly taking a mobile phone and disposing of the weapon in a nearby canal.
Following his arrest, police recovered the alleged weapon from the canal and the victim’s mobile phone from a pond in the Patiya area, based on information provided by the accused. Investigators have stated that, so far, no evidence of any additional motive or conspiracy has been found beyond the dispute over the loan and domestic tensions.
A murder case has been filed at Anwara Police Station. Authorities have indicated that the accused will be produced before a court, where the prosecution will seek a statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
