The untimely demise of Dr Dhipra Tabassum has brought critical issues surrounding domestic abuse and mental health into the public domain. Reports indicate that following childbirth, Dr Tabassum suffered from postpartum depression—a condition triggered by hormonal fluctuations—and was undergoing medical treatment for the illness.
According to the disclosed information, Dr Tabassum faced persistent abuse and a complete lack of domestic support from her immediate family members. Her partner, who is also a medical doctor, is alleged to have been abusive. Furthermore, her parents-in-law reportedly subjected her to a similar level of mistreatment.
Despite the family’s high educational and professional standing, it is reported that Dr Tabassum was denied basic human dignity within the household. Her maternal family was also unable to provide an adequate support system; her mother suffers from schizophrenia, whilst her father and brother reportedly failed to offer any assistance during her period of distress.
| Name / Relation | Professional / Social Profile | Alleged Role or Background |
| Dr Tabassum’s Partner (Siam) | Medical Doctor | Alleged to be an abusive partner. |
| Father-in-law | Medical Doctor | Alleged to have participated in the mistreatment. |
| Mother-in-law | Pathologist | Alleged to have participated in the mistreatment. |
| Shabnaz Rashid Diya | Meta-based social media influencer | Sister-in-law (Siam’s elder sister); noted for influencing social media platforms in Bangladesh prior to July 2024. |
| Simu Naser | Associated with earki | Brother-in-law (Shabnaz Diya’s husband); involved in political cartooning, graffiti, and animal welfare activities. |
Following her passing, all of Dr Tabassum’s social media accounts were deactivated, and numerous digital posts were deleted. Whilst the death has been categorised as a suicide, serious allegations of abetment to suicide have been raised against her in-laws. Concurrently, efforts have reportedly been made by certain quarters to prevent mainstream media outlets from publishing reports on the incident.
Experts and advocates with over twenty-five years of experience in women’s rights observe that domestic violence crosses all socio-economic strata, affecting elite and educated households just as severely as less affluent ones. Observers note that if the victim’s biological family chooses to reach a legal compromise with the accused parties, statutory justice becomes exceedingly difficult to achieve, leaving social boycotts by the public as the primary alternative.
