The formal campaigning period for the first phase of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections concluded at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, in strict adherence to the guidelines established by the Election Commission. Following a high-decibel period of political canvassing, polling is scheduled to commence this Thursday. This initial phase spans 152 constituencies distributed across 16 districts in both North and South Bengal, with voting hours set from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The final day of campaigning saw intense activity from major political entities. In the Asansol South constituency, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta spearheaded a roadshow in support of BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul. Concurrently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a public rally in Kulti for the BJP candidate. In the high-profile Nandigram seat, Suvendu Adhikari conducted extensive grassroots outreach, while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee participated in four separate campaign events to bolster support for the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Despite the conclusion of formal campaigning, several incidents of unrest were reported. In Dantan, West Midnapore, Ajit Kumar Jana, the BJP candidate, was allegedly attacked, resulting in a fractured arm. He was subsequently admitted to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. The assault involved the vandalism of his vehicle and several motorcycles, leaving multiple party workers injured. Allegations have been directed at TMC-affiliated individuals.
In Murshidabad’s Nauda constituency, tensions escalated during a campaign event for Humayun Kabir, the candidate for the Am Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), following a confrontation with police over alleged obstruction. Additionally, in Nandigram, police arrested Habibul Rahman (alias Nantu), the head of the Mohammadpur Panchayat and a TMC leader, on charges of attempting to influence voters.
Approximately 36 million voters are eligible to participate in this phase. The Election Commission has provided a detailed breakdown of the electorate:

To ensure a peaceful voting process, the Election Commission has deployed approximately 2,400 companies of central forces (roughly 240,000 personnel), marking the highest deployment in the state’s electoral history.
Technological measures include the installation of at least two cameras per polling station and mandatory webcasting. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be utilised in control rooms to monitor real-time feeds and trigger alerts for irregularities. Furthermore, 2,193 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been established, with the highest concentration (288 teams) stationed in Murshidabad. Social media is also under AI-driven surveillance to mitigate the spread of misinformation.
The second phase of polling is scheduled for 29 April, with the final counting of votes set for 4 May.
