In a significant joint operation, Mongla Police and the Bangladesh Navy apprehended a female drug trafficker, Safia Begum, from her residence on Madrasa Road in Mongla town. The raid, which took place on Tuesday night, resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of foreign liquor, yaba tablets, cash, and drug paraphernalia.
Safia Begum, the wife of Md. Abdur Rahim, was taken into custody following an intelligence-led operation. According to Manik Chandra Gain, the Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Mongla Police Station, the arrest was made after receiving credible information regarding the woman’s involvement in illicit drug trafficking and illegal alcohol distribution.
During the raid, authorities recovered multiple items intended for both distribution and personal use. The joint team of police and naval personnel conducted a meticulous search of the premises before confiscating the contraband. Following her arrest, Safia Begum was formally charged under the Narcotics Control Act and subsequently remanded to jail through the Bagherhat Court.
The items seized during the operation have been categorised as follows:
| Item Description | Quantity Seized | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign liquor bottles | 18 bottles | Imported alcoholic beverages |
| Yaba tablets | 2 pieces | Methamphetamine pills |
| Cash | 42,000 BDT | Believed to be proceeds from sales |
| Drug consumption paraphernalia | Multiple items | Used for ingesting yaba |
This operation underscores the ongoing commitment of Mongla law enforcement and the Navy to curb illegal drug trade and alcohol smuggling in the region. Local authorities emphasised that such raids are part of a broader strategy to protect public health and safety, particularly in urban areas where the circulation of illegal substances has increased in recent months.
Residents of Mongla have welcomed the crackdown, expressing hope that continued vigilance by police and naval forces will deter criminal activities and ensure safer communities. Officials have also encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly to help authorities tackle the growing threat of drug trafficking and illicit liquor distribution.
The arrest of Safia Begum marks a notable success in local anti-narcotics operations, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement actions and the importance of intelligence-based policing in Bangladesh’s ongoing fight against drug-related crime.
