With just five days remaining before the T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka has announced its 15-member squad, bringing several notable changes to the team that was initially named. The co-host nation’s selectors have opted for a mix of experience and emerging talent, signalling a strategic approach ahead of their home tournament.
The return of left-handed batsman Kamindu Mendis has generated the most discussion, while Dhananjaya de Silva has been omitted from the final squad. In addition, 23-year-old batter Pavon Rathnayake earns a call-up following promising performances, and Ishan Malinga, who suffered a shoulder injury during the England series, also makes the cut. Conversely, pacer Promod Madushan misses out.
Mendis, absent from the T20 squad against Pakistan last month and left out ahead of the England series, is now back in the fold. His comeback effectively replaces Dhananjaya, who had struggled for form in recent England and Pakistan series. Mendis, 27, has been inconsistent since the start of 2025, scoring only 159 runs in T20s at an average of 19.87 and a strike rate of 130.32. While Dhananjaya had been selected primarily to strengthen the bowling department, Mendis can perform a similar all-round role, though he has bowled just six overs in 12 matches this year.
The squad also offers an opportunity for left-arm spin all-rounder Dunith Wellalage, 23, though his relative inexperience in T20s is a concern. He has played only six T20 internationals, taking seven wickets, but possesses substantial franchise and domestic cricket experience. Another promising talent, Pavon Rathnayake, made his T20 debut in Pakistan last November but was dropped after one match. His century in the third ODI against England recently earned him a place in the squad; he maintains a strike rate of 100 across 25 T20 innings.
Sri Lanka’s bowling attack appears settled, with pacers Dushmantha Chameera, Matheesha Pathirana, and Ishan Malinga leading the charge, although Malinga’s fitness remains slightly uncertain. The spin department is anchored by Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, supported by Wellalage, Charith Asalanka, and Mendis.
Sri Lanka has been drawn in Group B, facing Australia, Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe, with all four matches on home soil:
