Germany: Aid Entering Gaza Still ‘Very Insufficient’

The German government has declared that the volume of humanitarian aid entering Gaza remains “very insufficient,” despite marginal improvements, and has signalled increasing pressure on Israel to fulfil its obligations. This statement follows a visit by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to the region and the first-ever German military food airdrops into the besieged territory.

Developments

Event Details
German Government Position Aid reaching Gaza is “very insufficient”
Recent Action First German military food airdrops into Gaza
Ministerial Visit Johann Wadephul visited the region on Thursday and Friday
Israeli Obligation Must ensure full and unrestricted delivery of aid, says Berlin
UN Figures (as of latest update) 6,000 aid trucks awaiting Israeli clearance
German Estimate 220 trucks now allowed daily into Gaza (up from previous levels)

Statement from German Government

In a statement on Saturday, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said:

“Germany notes limited initial progress in the delivery of humanitarian aid to the population of the Gaza Strip, which, however, remains very insufficient to alleviate the emergency situation.”

He further emphasised:

“Israel remains obligated to ensure the full delivery of aid.”

Mounting International and Domestic Pressure

While Israel has slightly increased the number of aid trucks allowed to enter Gaza, international agencies continue to warn that the current levels are dangerously low for a population exceeding two million, many of whom are facing starvation.

Germany, a traditional ally of Israel, has toughened its stance in recent weeks. A German security cabinet meeting held on Saturday discussed “different options” for exerting further pressure on Israel. Though no decisions were made, one potential measure under consideration is a partial suspension of arms deliveries to Israel.

Aid Theft and Diversion: Accusations and Counterclaims

There is growing concern over the fate of the aid once it enters Gaza:

  • The German government expressed unease about reports that “large quantities of humanitarian aid are being withheld by Hamas and criminal organisations.”
  • Israel has alleged that Hamas is diverting the aid for its own use.
  • However, Jonathan Whittall, a senior official at the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), countered this narrative in May, stating:

“The real theft of aid since the beginning of the war has been carried out by criminal gangs, under the watch of Israeli forces.”

Israel is also accused of equipping certain Palestinian criminal networks to counter Hamas, who allegedly exploit the chaotic conditions to loot aid convoys.

Human Toll of the Conflict

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate rapidly, with devastating consequences for civilians on both sides.

Casualty Statistics Source
Israeli Deaths (7 Oct 2023 Attack) 1,219 (AFP tally, based on official figures)
Palestinian Deaths (Gaza, post-attack) At least 60,249 (Gaza’s Health Ministry)

The United Nations considers the casualty figures reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry to be credible.
