In a bid to bolster security ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has announced a nationwide ban on all drone flights without prior authorisation from the authority. The prohibition will be in effect from Tuesday, 10 February, until Sunday, 15 February, covering the six-day election period.

Kawser Mahmud, a spokesperson for CAAB’s Public Relations Department, confirmed the directive to the media, emphasising that the restriction aims to prevent any misuse of drones that could compromise public safety or the integrity of the electoral process.

“During this period, drone operations will be strictly limited to the Defence Forces and law enforcement agencies. No individual, organisation, or private company is permitted to operate a drone without express approval from CAAB,” he stated.

The authority further warned that violations of the ban would trigger legal action in accordance with national aviation laws. This measure is part of broader election security arrangements designed to safeguard voters, candidates, and election infrastructure from potential threats.

Authorities noted that while drones have become increasingly popular for photography, surveying, and recreational purposes, unregulated flights during sensitive periods pose significant security risks. By restricting drone activity, officials hope to mitigate potential incidents such as espionage, disruption of polling stations, or public safety hazards.

For clarity, the CAAB has outlined the key provisions of the drone restriction period in the table below:

Drone Operation StatusEligible UsersValidity PeriodLegal Consequences
Fully restricted without approvalCivilian individuals and private organisations10–15 February 2026Legal action under aviation law
PermittedDefence forces and law enforcement agencies10–15 February 2026None, if authorised

CAAB officials urge all drone operators to plan accordingly and secure the necessary permissions well in advance if their operations are essential for official or security purposes. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure, transparent, and disruption-free election across the country.
