A timeless folk song written by the celebrated rural poet (“Pallikabi”) Jasimuddin is set to serve as the centrepiece for the official promotional campaign of the upcoming Bangladeshi feature film Mastul. The track, titled “Amay Bhasaili Re”, has been re-recorded for the cinema’s soundtrack, with the prominent actor and musical artist Fazlur Rahman Babu providing the vocals for this contemporary rendition.
The narrative of Mastul is constructed around the arduous lives of riverine communities, sailors, and transient populations who inhabit the floating waterscapes. According to the film’s director, Mohammad Nuruzzaman, the production team sought a musical accompaniment that would mirror the thematic atmosphere and emotional weight of this specific setting.
Director Nuruzzaman disclosed that the creative team initially planned to commission an entirely original composition for the project. However, during the pre-production and editorial discussions, the cultural resonance of Jasimuddin’s traditional masterpiece was repeatedly brought forward. Following collective consultations among the key stakeholders and creative heads, “Amay Bhasaili Re” was officially selected. The task of re-arranging the melody and updating the musical composition for modern cinema audiences was assigned to the music director and composer Labik Kamal Gourab.
In addition to contributing his vocal talents to the promotional soundtrack, Fazlur Rahman Babu plays a structurally significant character within the film. Reflecting on his dual involvement with the project, Babu highlighted the unique artistic parameters established by the director for his on-screen appearance.
Artistic Insights from Fazlur Rahman Babu
“The cinematic narrative chronicles the profound struggles of human existence. The director determined that a dedicated musical piece was essential for the promotional phase of the film. It was in accordance with his specific creative vision that this promotional track featuring my vocals was integrated into the project. I recorded the vocal tracks for segments of ‘Amay Bhasaili Re’ a considerable time ago. Interestingly, my character does not deliver a single line of dialogue throughout the entire film. Despite having no spoken lines, I portray a highly critical role in the narrative. The combination of this music and the performance leaves me very optimistic about the film’s prospects.”
Mastul has already generated substantial international attention prior to its scheduled domestic theatrical release. The feature film achieved its world premiere last year at the prestigious Moscow International Film Festival. Following its initial international debut, the production was screened across a variety of global film festivals, securing positive critiques from international reviewers and festival audiences for its realistic portrayal of river-based livelihoods.
The film boasts an ensemble cast of established performers from the Bangladeshi art-house and mainstream entertainment sectors. Alongside Fazlur Rahman Babu, the principal cast features Deepok Suman, Aminur Rahman Mukul, Arif Hassan, and Sifat Bannya in vital roles.
The director has finalised the distribution timeline for the film’s domestic rollout. Mastul is scheduled to be released across commercial cinema theatres in Bangladesh on 17 July. To initiate the formal marketing campaign, the production company plans to release the full audio and visual track of “Amay Bhasaili Re” during the middle of this month, serving as the official opening gambit for the film’s theatrical publicity drive.
