A series of violent clashes erupted between local residents and Bangladesh Coast Guard personnel in the Joymoni Thotha area of Chila Union, located within the Mongla Upazila of Bagerhat. The unrest left at least 10 villagers, including both men and women, injured. The confrontations occurred on Thursday, 11 June, when a group of locals marched towards the Coast Guard station to demand information regarding Miraj Shekh, a local fisherman who has been missing for two months.
According to eyewitness accounts, tensions escalated rapidly when the villagers approached the facility to inquire about the missing fisherman. The interaction degenerated into physical confrontations between the assembly and the stationed personnel. In an attempt to bring the deteriorating situation under control and disperse the crowd, Coast Guard personnel fired blank warning shots. The discharge of firearms triggered widespread panic among the gathered crowd, and at least 10 individuals sustained various injuries whilst attempting to flee the scene.
Following the initial clashes, local residents alleged that the Coast Guard took three female family members of the missing fisherman into custody. The individuals identified by locals were Miraj Shekh’s mother, Taslima Begum; his wife, Mukta Begum; and his sister, Liza Islam. Order was eventually restored in the area following the arrival of reinforcement detachments from the Mongla Thana Police, the Bangladesh Navy, and additional Coast Guard units.
The root of the community’s grievance dates back to the evening of 10 April. According to statements provided by his family, Miraj Shekh generated an income by operating a rental motorcycle alongside his regular occupation as a fisherman in the Sundarbans. At approximately 7:00 PM on 10 April, two unidentified individuals dressed in plain clothes reportedly detained him from the front of a local tea stall in the Joymoni Thotha area.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Shekh’s wife, Mukta Begum, rushed to the location. She reported seeing her husband being transported towards Mongla aboard a Coast Guard speedway vessel. Shekh has remained missing since that night. Despite his family organizing numerous public demonstrations, including human chains and formal press conferences at the Mongla and Bagerhat press clubs over the subsequent two months, his whereabouts remain unverified.
The Coast Guard administration has not issued an official statement or clarification regarding the allegations of detention or the firing of warning shots. However, local administrative and security sources confirmed that a joint operation involving the police, Navy, and Coast Guard is actively underway in the Joymoni Thotha area to maintain order.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mongla Thana, Atikur Rahman, confirmed the stabilization of the area on Thursday. He stated that the overall situation had returned to normal and noted that comprehensive details regarding the incident would be disclosed at a later time.
