The Bangladesh Administrative Service Association (BASA) has strongly criticised controversial remarks made by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shahjahan Chowdhury, in which he suggested that the administration should be brought under political control during elections. Chowdhury allegedly stated that officials should act according to political directives—arresting, filing cases, and even arranging protocol for political leaders, with police following their instructions.
In a statement issued on Thursday and released to the media on Friday, BASA described the remarks as “irresponsible and entirely unacceptable.” The association urged all public figures to refrain from making such comments in the future, warning that they undermine both the authority and integrity of the civil service.
The statement emphasised that civil servants are professional, impartial, and ethical members of the country’s administrative machinery. Their primary responsibility is the implementation of state policies, adherence to the law, and ensuring equal opportunity, security, and impartiality during elections. BASA further clarified that administrative officials are not affiliated with any political party, ideology, or faction, and must maintain neutrality at all times.
Highlighting the upcoming national parliamentary elections, the association reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, impartiality, and efficiency. It noted that these qualities form the core identity of the civil service and constitute the essential principles of professional ethics.
BASA’s response reflects wider concerns over political interference in public administration, a topic that has become increasingly sensitive in Bangladesh’s electoral environment. Analysts note that such remarks, if acted upon, could erode public trust in state institutions, compromise the fairness of elections, and jeopardise the independence of the civil service, which is a cornerstone of good governance. By issuing this statement, BASA has sent a firm message that the country’s administrative system must remain free from political manipulation.
