A devastating fire broke out at a spinning mill in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, on Sunday night, causing substantial damage estimated at around BDT 7 crore, according to the factory management.
The blaze started at the Bashar Spinning Mill, located in the Nishinda area of the upazila, at approximately 10:45 pm on 15 February. The fire rapidly engulfed machinery and stock, prompting an urgent response from the local fire service.
Swapon Ahmed, General Manager of Bashar Spinning Mill, said, “We received the news of the fire around 11 pm. The exact cause is not yet confirmed, but preliminary assessments suggest an electrical short circuit might have triggered the blaze. The mill employs nearly 630 workers. The fire has caused extensive damage to the factory, including machinery and finished goods. Currently, the mill remains closed, and operations have been halted until further notice.”
The Bhaluka Fire Service promptly responded to the emergency. Senior Station Officer Atikur Rahman stated, “Upon receiving the alert at 11 pm, seven fire service units were dispatched immediately. Firefighters worked tirelessly for approximately two and a half hours before bringing the fire under control.”
Deputy Director (In-Charge) of the Fire Service, Purn Chandra Mutsuddy, inspected the site to assess the extent of the damage and oversee ongoing safety measures.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of industrial facilities to electrical hazards and underscores the importance of stringent safety protocols. Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
