Strong Protests May Erupt to Remove Dr. Yunus: Jahed Ur Rahman

University academic and political analyst Jahed Ur Rahman has suggested that there is a possibility of vigorous protests to remove Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, due to his firm pro-election stance.

He made these remarks in a video published on his YouTube channel, Jaheds Tech, on Wednesday (3 September).

Jahed Ur Rahman said: “A very strong movement could begin against Dr. Yunus to remove him. At the very least, speeches and statements will circulate. Circumstances could be created to ensure Dr. Yunus can no longer remain in office. Why? Because Dr. Yunus has taken an extremely firm position in favour of holding elections.”

He further explained: “Anyone in this country who takes a strong pro-election stance becomes an enemy of certain groups. They will be attacked in multiple ways, and various failures, some of which have been criticised before but not recently, will be highlighted anew. These actions are inevitable because Dr. Yunus has taken a very rigid position regarding elections.”

Recently, Dr. Yunus met with BNP, Jamaat, and NCP to discuss the electoral process. After these meetings, he clarified his stance on the elections, which Jahed Ur Rahman described as: “That was very tough.”

Jahed Ur Rahman criticised the interim government, noting: “There are administrative failures in Dr. Yunus’s government. There is a lack of strictness and issues in management. We have discussed these matters for a long time, and it is reasonable to do so. But as long as he remains in office, attempts to derail elections will not be easy. There are many players involved, and both domestic and foreign actors will attempt interference. Domestic players will find it difficult because those supporting elections are strong.”

He also stated: “Even if foreign actors attempt to intervene, with people like Dr. Yunus in charge, it is easy to neutralise such attempts. He holds considerable strength in this regard.”

Jahed Ur Rahman asserted that even in the event of attempts to derail the election, Dr. Yunus will not step down prematurely. He will remain in office to ensure a democratic government is established in Bangladesh before leaving.

“Dr. Yunus has previously shown a tendency to avoid confrontation, which may give some people hope. Therefore, in the coming days, severe attacks against him will intensify. There will be mockery, ridicule, and derision directed at him. Once he steps down, they may try to install their own person in his place, attempt to remove the Army Chief, and the country could descend into chaos and anarchy under a weakened presidency.”

This analysis highlights the political tensions and challenges facing the interim government as Dr. Yunus continues to take a firm pro-election position, potentially inviting strong opposition from certain political factions.
